Hazel Rose is an artist/singer/emcee from San Francisco. Formerly the front woman of hip-hop group 40Love, she is now on her solo journey, performing and recording with her live cross-genre electronic band.
Hazel Rose was a rapper as part of the project 40Love. They released a few records, and in 2012 she started performing solo when 40Love decided to take a break. Rose’s music is rooted in soul, hip-hop and electronica. Sometimes there’s an international groove in her songs, which may induce belly dancing.

Was there a band you heard when you were young that inspired you to become a musician?
Two really important albums that made me want to sing were “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” and Erykah Badu’s “Mama’s Gun.” I was in middle school when they came out, and the rawness of their stories and the way they were unafraid to share their most vulnerable selves drew them to me. They both also had such unique sounds and seemed to not compromise their vision, but stand firm in the messages they put out into the world.
How does living in the Bay Area affect your music?
I grew up in San Francisco, and everything about it has affected my art. I really started performing at live band freestyle jam sessions in North Beach with some of the most amazing musicians I know to this day.
What’s the most important aspect to putting on a live show?
The most important aspect to performance is constantly staying in the zone. What that means to me is striving to stay in my highest life state where I am practicing my craft on a daily basis. That means voice lessons, dance rehearsals, constant recording, writing, reading, chanting, listening, watching. I get a lot of this faith and inspiration from my spirituality; I practice Nichiren Buddhism with the (Soka Gakkai International of America) in San Francisco. Since creation is a spiritual act, I believe that if I stay firmly rooted in my spirituality, I will put positive vibrations out into the world.
